Residential architects for considered extensions, renovations and heritage homes.

The Practice

Abode Architects is a residential architecture practice based in Glasgow, working across Scotland on extensions, renovations, new homes and heritage properties.

Much of our work involves older buildings, listed properties, conservation areas and homes where the answer is not immediately obvious. We help clients understand what is possible, what is sensible, and what is worth pursuing before they commit to major decisions.

Our clients are often homeowners, families and developers who care about design quality, but also need clear advice, proper coordination and a process that is well managed from the outset.

We do not see architecture as simply producing drawings. Our role is to bring structure to complexity: testing the brief, understanding the constraints, developing the right design response, and guiding the project through planning, listed building consent, building warrant, tender and construction where required.

Good architecture should make the process clearer, not more difficult. That means honest advice early, careful design thinking, realistic conversations about budget and risk, and drawings that are properly considered before decisions become expensive to change.

Led by Connor

Abode Architects is led by Connor Steven, an ARB-registered architect, RIAS member and Certified Passive House Designer.

Before founding Abode in 2020, Connor worked on large-scale residential and student residential projects with construction values of up to around £40m. That background shapes the way the practice approaches private residential work today: structured, commercially aware, carefully coordinated and calm under pressure.

Connor now leads residential projects ranging from focused alterations and extensions through to substantial renovations, new homes and heritage-led projects. While project values vary significantly depending on scope, property type and level of intervention, larger townhouse renovations, listed building projects and whole-property refurbishments can often reach £1m+ construction value.

A large part of the practice’s work involves traditional buildings, listed properties and conservation areas, where good design has to be balanced with planning policy, technical performance, buildability and respect for the existing fabric.

Outside the studio, Connor is usually with his wife and friends, outdoors somewhere, watching football, or occasionally playing guitar in a Glasgow bar.
